Four characters - Dan, Anna, Larry, and Alice navigate love, desire, and betrayal. A quartet of strangers in a sexual square dance, their story unfolds over the span of four years.
Closer presents a biting commentary on intimacy, connection, and the often destructive consequences of human interaction. It is an unflinching examination of love’s darker side.
As relationships spark, fracture, and shift, the characters circle each other in a brutal game of seduction and confession.
Through this roller-coaster of infidelity and deceit, Marber’s anti-romantic romantic comedy offers a cynical, and painfully accurate analysis of love in the modern day.
Closer premiered at the Royal National Theatre's Cottesloe Theatre in London in 1997.
The play has been described as a work that gets under its audience's skin, and “not for the emotionally squeamish, a work in which Marber is alert to the cruel inequalities of love...”
