An Introduction to Theatre Adjudication 2025

An introduction to theatre adjudication

GMDF is looking for adjudicators – we are always looking for adjudicators!

The GMDF adjudications are renowned for their consistent and high standard. It is of the utmost importance to us that those standards are maintained and as such we are always on the look out for potential adjudicators.

To that end GMDF will be holding a course on An Introduction to Theatre Adjudication. This course will be delivered by Martin Paul Roche and it is open to members of any GMDF society who may be interested in becoming a GMDF adjudicator. It will be delivered over three sessions.

23rd April 7-10pm at Droylsden Little Theatre: We will look at the process of adjudicating and preparing participants to conduct an adjudication at a live theatre performance (a dress rehearsal).
27th April 2pm at Guide Bridge Theatre: Attend the Dress Rehearsal of  The Eternal Soldier. Following this, participants will submit via email, within 48 hours, their adjudication.
4th May 11am-3pm at Droylsden Little Theatre: We will debrief the process and examine and evaluate the adjudications and the learning from the process.

What we will cover:

•Appreciate the role of amateur theatre and the basis for participation within it
•Examine the purpose and function of a Drama Festival within amateur theatre
•Discuss the skills and abilities required to be an Adjudicator
•Identify the role of an Adjudicator in a Drama Festival
•Identify the objectives of an Adjudication and an Adjudicator
•Examine form and structure of Adjudications
•Consider within written Adjudications aspects of:
    –vocabulary
    –phraseology
    –terminology
    –personal style and expression
    –knowledge
•Discuss the practicalities of observation skills and note taking
•Adjudicate a production and evaluate same.

If you are interested, please apply by email to Hazel (hazel@gmdf.org) stating your name and GMDF member society, but just before you fire off your reply a few notes:

Tea and coffee will be provided but you will need to bring your own lunch.

There will be no charge and places are strictly limited (12 persons) and will therefore be allocated on a first come first served basis.

We respectfully ask that you make sure you are able to attend on all three of the above dates.

This course is open solely to GMDF members of GMDF member societies who are wishing to become adjudicators and currently have no experience. It is not open to those who are associated with or adjudicate for other Festivals / casual observers. Attendees should be aspiring to undertaking the role for GMDF at some point in the future.

We very much look forward to hearing from you as it is our constant aim to strengthen our pool of adjudicators thereby continuing our quality commitment to amateur theatre.
