Bryony Lavery’s Treasure Island is a bold, imaginative re-telling of the classic pirate adventure with a fresh and contemporary voice. When young Jim Hawkins discovers a pirate’s map at her family's inn, she sets sail on a treacherous voyage to uncover the buried treasure of the infamous Captain Flint. Along the way, she encounters mutiny, danger, and the charismatic but cunning Long John Silver. Lavery’s adaptation brings a modern twist, notably gender-swapping several roles, highlighting themes of identity, bravery, and morality amidst the thrill of high-seas adventure.

Character Breakdown:

  • Jim Hawkins – A brave and curious teenage girl who narrates the story; she’s intelligent, determined, and longs for adventure.
  •
  • Long John Silver – A charming, manipulative, and morally complex pirate with one leg; ship’s cook and secret leader of the mutineers.
  •
  • Doctor Livesey – A clever, calm, and principled physician who joins the voyage.
  •
  • Squire Trelawney – A well-meaning but sometimes pompous man who finances the expedition.
  •
  • Captain Smollett – The disciplined and loyal captain of the Hispaniola, suspicious of the crew.
  •
  • Ben Gunn – A marooned and eccentric former pirate who once served under Captain Flint.
  •
  • Mrs. Hawkins – Jim’s mother; practical and protective.
