Girton College, Cambridge, 1896 – home to the country’s first female students and an object of annoyance and derision to many. The latest female intake must balance their studies with economic difficulties, radical politics and the distraction of men in a world of overpowering, ingrained prejudice. And whilst men graduate, the women leave with nothing but the stigma of being an educated woman – unqualified and unmarriageable; the fight becomes not just for their right to an academic life but also to change history.
