Pte Jim Smith was a Bolton lad who joined the army in 1910,served in India and when the war broke out in 1914 was sent to Gallipoli and took part in the most famous and bloody engagement in the history of the Lancashire fusiliers. In his service he won two Good Conduct medals and promotion.
However, after a heavy bombardment on the Somme in which he was seriously wounded,he became a changed man, deserted three times and was finally CourtMarshalled and sentenced to be shot at dawn in September 1917.
This deeply moving play tells of his last hours remembering his girl friend with his mates who reluctantly become part of the firing party on that misty morning in Flanders.
