Presented by special arrangement with Samuel French Ltd, this incredibly moving and gripping play is based on the author's own experience as a Captain in the East Surrey Regiment and set in a dugout on the Somme 50 yeards from enemy lines, just before the last great German offensive.
The play deals with the human and inconsequential details of daily life of a group
of officers. It highlights the resilience and understated decency of the human spirit under unimaginable pressure.
Sheffiff always maintained the play was not written to make people ponder the stupidity and horrors of war, nor was it a piece of propaganda. It was written to capture the waste and futility of conflict and to celebrate all those who fought in it. It is a compelling classic World War 1 drama.
