BEATRICE              

Quick-witted and verbally adept, she uses her wit to tease others – notably Benedick. Never-the-less she is generous and warm-hearted.

20s to early 40s

BENEDICK             

A gentleman soldier. Witty and a foil for Beatrice. He swears he will never marry and is critical of women.

20s to early 40s

CLAUDIO               

A young soldier, in love with Hero. He is valiant and loving, but unfortunately gullible.

Late teens to early 30s

HERO                       

The beautiful young daughter of Leonato and cousin to Beatrice. Hero is gentle and innocent.

Late teens to early 30s

DON PEDRO        

A nobleman and long-time friend of Leonato, leader of soldiers including Benedick and Claudio. He is politically and socially powerful, but generous and loving to his friends.

Late 30s to 60s

LEONATO              

Governor of Messina, father of Hero and uncle to Beatrice. He is a respected nobleman and the action of the play takes place in his home.

50s to 60s

DON JOHN           

Don Pedro’s illegitimate half-brother. He is melancholy and sullen. He creates a dark scheme to ruin the happiness of Hero and Claudio – the villain of the play.

Late 20s to 50s

MARGARET          

Hero’s serving woman who unwittingly helps Don John and Borachio (her lover) to deceive Claudio. She is honest, lower class and fond of bawdy jokes and teasing.

Late 20s to 50s

BORACHIO           

His name means ‘drunkard’ in Italian. He is an associate of Don John and conspires with him to trick Claudio and Don Pedro into thinking that Hero has been unfaithful to Claudio.

CONRADE             

A henchman of Don John and privy to his schemes.

Late 20s to 50s

DOGBERRY           

In charge of the Watch (policemen of Messina). He is middle class, but has a habit of using the wrong words to convey his meaning to comic effect.

30s to 60s

VERGES                  

Deputy to Dogberry.

20s to 60s

ANTONIO              

Leonato’s elderly brother

60s to 70s

BALTHASAR         

A servant in Leonato’s house. Balthasar flirts with Margaret at the masked party and sings the song ‘Sigh no more Ladies’

20s to 50s

URSULA                 

One of Hero’s waiting women, rather more refined than Margaret.

20s to 50s
