The Killing of Sister George

By Frank Marcus

Produced by Rossendale Players

Directed By Mark Storton.

Due to circumstances beyond our control we are urgently trying to re-cast the role of Alice McNaught/Childie in the April production of The Killing of Sister George by this award winning society.

Character:  Alice ‘Childie’ McNaught: Described in the script as a ‘girl-woman’ in her 30’s. A slight build would be an advantage in comparison to ‘George’. A great character part, she needs to give the impression of being child like, almost role-playing in the relationship, whilst still having the maturity of a 30 year old. A large role with lots of dialogue. In the original play, Childie was played by Eileen Atkins opposite Beryl Reid as ‘George’. In the subsequent film Reid reprised her role and Childie was played by and by a young Susannah York.

Play synopsis: Set in the early 60’s.

Sister George is a beloved character in the popular radio series Applehurst, a nurse who ministers to the medical needs and personal problems of the local villagers. June Buckridge, who in real life is a gin-guzzling, cigar-chomping, slightly sadistic masculine woman, is the antithesis of the sweet character she plays. She is often called George in real life, and lives with Alice "Childie" McNaught, a younger woman she often verbally and sometimes physically abuses. When George discovers that her character is scheduled to be killed off, she becomes increasingly impossible to work and live with. Mercy Croft, an executive at the radio station, intercedes in her professional and personal lives, supposedly to help, but she actually has an agenda of her own.

The production dates are Saturday 2nd April – Saturday 9th April 2016. Rehearsals will take place on three evenings a week and some Sundays, beginning at the end of January.

There will be a casting evening for the role on Wednesday 20th January at 7.30pm at The Millennium Theatre, Waterfoot.
