New York, 1850. The grandest house in Washington Square befits the master of the household, Dr Austin Sloper.
Sloper’s wife was a ravishing beauty, who died giving birth to their daughter, Catherine. Perhaps that is why Sloper is both intentionally and unintentionally cruel to Catherine.
When fortune hunter, Morris Townsend, professes his love for Catherine, Sloper sees through the dashing young man’s façade. But Catherine sees it as a chance to escape the house, to live and to love.
