Compelling classic World War 1 drama, this incredibly moving play is based on the author's own experience as a Captain in the East Surrey Regiment. Set in a dugout on the Somme, 50 yards from enemy lines, just before the last great German offensive, it highlights the resilience and understated decency of the juman spirit under unimaginable pressure.
Sherriff always maintained the play was written to capture the waste and futility of conflict and to celebrate all those who fought in it.
